A motorist has been fined by police for displaying the St George cross on his front number plate, even though the Government has made it legal. The Mail on Sunday has reported how lifeguard Neil Prendergast had the patriotic sticker on his father’s Opel Corsa when he was pulled over by a policeman and given a £30 penalty for displaying a registration 'not fixed in accordance' with motoring laws.
However, the Government announced four years ago the intention to permit the display of national flags and national identifiers on vehicle number plates. The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 are in the process of being amended and, as a result, the DVLA said they "are taking a relaxed view on enforcement, unless the emblems distort or affect the readability or recognition of the registration mark."
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "We will have to consider the exact wording of the law on this. If the ticket has been erroneously issued it will be cancelled."
